Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Backpack Brigade?

The Backpack Brigade was established in 2017.  This outreach was created as a way to set children up with the tools needed to successfully kick off a school year.  We provide school supplies to local area children in need.

Additionally, we provide supplies and nonperishable food to the teaching staff at schools as a way to offset classroom costs and support educators.

Who is benefiting from the donation drive? Are my donations staying local?

Yes! Your Backpack Brigade donation  serves our local community here in Harnett County and surrounding areas.

I’d like to make sure a child is taken care of for the school year. What can I do?

Purchase any of the items on the supply list and return them during services until Sunday, August 13.

I’m not local or I don’t want to go to the store.

We are working on an Amazon wishlist! Soon, you will be able to  purchase from the list and it will be shipped directly to us.

I hate shopping or I don’t have time to shop but I still want to help.

Monetary donations are gladly accepted and will be put to good use! Donate on our church app or reach out to us at backpack@spoutsprings.org

Why are their food items on the school supply list?

Many of the children at schools we assist rely on free or reduced food programs. With the lunch schedules varying in the school, this may leave children eating their last guaranteed meal for the day early on.  Snacks and nonperishable foods are given to food insecure children at the end of the day as well as during the day if a snack is needed.

The list is broad. Why are there so many items?

The list was taken from the current school supply lists in a way that would cover all grade levels.  Items that are grade specific, such as primary composition books or beginner pencils, will be given directly to the classrooms using that item and not left in the backpack.

Is there a deadline to turn in donations?

Yes. Donations need to be turned in on or before August 13th.  We can accept items during any church service between July 23 and August 13.
